Alkali Lake, Bolivia

  1. I love the sheer emptiness of the place. Is it a drying lake, forming a salt plane? I couldn’t find much information on it, to be honest.

    • You are right I think – this one was wet and the Flamingos seemed to love breeding there – it was when I’d just visited Salar de Uyuni which is the largest salt flat in the world which has a thick, dry crust of salt and a pool of brine underneath (formed as a result of transformations between several prehistoric lakes). If this one dried out, it would also be a salt flat like that one too. These lakes are often pretty pastel shades but smell very bad. I’m glad you like the image, thank you 🙂
